Sermon Devotional: A Faith That Can't Keep Quiet - Acts 4:20

Have you ever found yourself talking nonstop about something you love? Maybe it’s a hobby, your kids, a new favorite show, or even your job. When we’re passionate about something, we just can’t help but talk about it. But what about the things we love but hesitate to share? Maybe it’s a personal interest, an unpopular opinion, or—most importantly—our faith.

I remember when my wife and I were at a gathering with friends and some new acquaintances. As the night went on, I realized we were both in separate conversations—talking about the exact same thing: racing. We love the sport, the community, and everything about it so much that we just can’t stop talking about it. At one point, I even told the group, “If we’re talking too much about racing, just tell us to shut up.” We were that excited about it.

But then I started thinking—why is it so easy to be vocal about things like sports, hobbies, or family, but so difficult when it comes to our faith? Why do we sometimes keep quiet about the very thing that has transformed our lives the most?

The Boldness of Peter and John

In Acts 4, Peter and John encounter a man who had been lame since birth. Instead of giving him money, they give him something far greater—healing in the name of Jesus. The man stands up, walks, and praises God. It’s a miracle! But instead of being celebrated, Peter and John are arrested and threatened by the religious leaders, who order them to stop speaking about Jesus.

Their response in Acts 4:20 is powerful: “For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” In other words, they couldn’t help themselves. They had experienced the life-changing power of Jesus, and there was no way they could stay silent. Even under the threat of persecution, they boldly proclaimed the gospel.

When they returned to their fellow believers, they didn’t pray for safety or an easier road. Instead, they prayed for more boldness! And God answered. The place where they were gathered shook, and they continued to preach the word of God fearlessly.

What’s Holding You Back?

For many of us, our faith is something we hold dear, but we hesitate to talk about it. Maybe we fear rejection, judgment, or making others uncomfortable. But if we truly believe that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, shouldn’t we be unable to keep quiet about Him?

The problem isn’t always unwillingness—it’s often that we don’t have anything to share because we aren’t actively living out our faith. If we’re not stepping out in faith, trusting God, or allowing Him to work in our lives, we won’t have any stories to tell. But when we boldly follow His call, He gives us testimonies we can’t help but share.

It’s Time to Speak Up

So here’s the challenge: live the kind of faith-filled life that gives you something to talk about. Step out boldly, trust God fully, and share what He’s done in your life. When we do, we’ll find that we can’t keep quiet—just like Peter and John.

Things to Think About

  1. What’s something in your life that you can’t stop talking about? Why do you think it’s so easy to share that, but harder to share your faith?

  2. Think about a time when you saw God move in your life. How did it impact you, and did you share that story with others? Why or why not?

  3. What’s one step you can take this week to be more vocal about your faith—whether through a conversation, social media, or prayer for boldness?

Let’s be people who live in such a way that we can’t help but talk about what God is doing in our lives!
